CM Omar calls for education beyond examinations

CM stresses critical thinking, digital literacy and responsible use of AI in schools

NEW DELHI, October 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday called for an education system that prepares children for life beyond examinations, stressing the need to develop critical thinking, digital literacy, adaptability, creativity and a sense of responsibility among students.

Addressing the School Leader of the Year 2026 Summit & Awards in New Delhi, Abdullah said school education must focus on the holistic development of children rather than academic performance alone.

He highlighted the role of principals and headteachers in shaping students’ values, aspirations and learning environments, saying strong school leadership was essential to building safe, inclusive and student-centric institutions.

The Chief Minister said schools must nurture communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills to prepare students for emerging challenges.

On the use of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in education, Abdullah called for their responsible adoption to improve learning outcomes, personalise instruction and support teachers. He stressed that technology should complement, rather than replace, the human element of education.

He also emphasised continuous professional development for teachers and school leaders, advocating greater exposure to innovative teaching methods, exchange of best practices and collaboration among educational institutions.

Abdullah called for an inclusive approach to educational excellence, saying children in rural, remote and underserved areas should have access to quality education alongside their urban counterparts.

He said governments, educators, institutions, parents and communities needed to work collectively to address the diverse academic, social and developmental needs of children.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of collaboration among educational institutions in India and abroad to share successful practices, encourage innovation and improve education standards.

He observed that recognising exemplary school leadership could encourage other institutions to adopt and adapt effective practices to their own contexts.

During the event, Abdullah felicitated heads of several educational institutions in recognition of their contributions.

Among those present were Achyuta Samanta of the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology; Dalip Sharma, executive chairman of the Association of Indian Principals; Kashish Jhamb, chief technology officer of the association and chief executive officer of City Innovates; and Rajesh Pasari, managing director of Macmillan Education India.

Chancellors and senior officials from Indian and international universities, representatives of Austrade, school founders, directors, principals and heads of schools from across the country also attended the summit.
