SRINAGAR, AUGUST 18: PHDCCI Kashmir has called for stronger food safety standards alongside greater capacity building and regulatory support for businesses during an interactive meeting with Rajit Punhani, Secretary to the Government of India and Chief Executive Officer of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
PHDCCI Kashmir Chair Vicky Shaw and Executive Committee member Shahejehan Khan participated in the meeting, which was organised by Khalid Jehangir, Commissioner, Food & Drugs Administration, Jammu & Kashmir.
Devesh Kumar Mahla, Director, FSSAI Northern Region, also attended the interaction.
During the meeting, Shaw said PHDCCI Kashmir supported both consumer safety and ease of doing business, while welcoming regulatory reforms in the food sector.
He, however, stressed that businesses should first be adequately trained on food safety standards through scientific awareness, capacity building and guidance before punitive regulatory measures are initiated.
Supporting the views of Commissioner Khalid Jehangir, Shaw also advocated bringing restaurants and eateries in Jammu & Kashmir in line with global food safety and service standards.
He called for clear and reliable declarations on menus, including whether food products being served are fresh or frozen and the specific nature of meat being offered, in accordance with FSSAI norms.
According to Shaw, greater transparency in food declarations would strengthen consumer confidence and could also contribute to increased local and tourist footfall at restaurants and other eating establishments.
He reiterated PHDCCI Kashmir’s commitment to ensuring that food safety, hygiene, consumer trust and transparency remain non-negotiable in the hospitality and food-service sector.
“There must be no compromise on safety, hygiene, trust and transparent declaration of what is served to the public,” Shaw said.
