JKPICCA seeks uninterrupted NH-44 connectivity, 24×7 movement of fruit trucks

Srinagar, Aug 3: The Jammu & Kashmir Fruits & Vegetables Processing & Integrated Cold Chain Association (JKPICCA) has urged the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister to ensure uninterrupted connectivity on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44) during the forthcoming apple harvesting season, warning that recurring road disruptions cause heavy losses to the horticulture sector.

In a statement issued on Monday, JKPICCA President Bashir Ahmad Naik said horticulture is the backbone of Jammu & Kashmir’s economy and supports the livelihood of lakhs of families. He said highway closures triggered by heavy rainfall, landslides and other weather-related incidents every year severely affect apple growers, transporters, traders and cold chain operators.

Naik called on the government to make advance preparations by deploying additional manpower, heavy earth-moving machinery, excavators, loaders and emergency restoration teams at landslide-prone stretches of NH-44 to ensure that any blockades are cleared promptly and traffic is restored at the earliest.

“The apple crop is not merely a commodity; it is the result of an entire year’s hard work, sweat, blood and substantial financial investment by our farmers. Any delay in transportation adversely affects the quality of the produce, reduces market prices and causes avoidable economic losses to growers,” he said.

The JKPICCA president also sought permission for uninterrupted 24×7 movement of trucks carrying fresh apples and other perishable horticultural produce during the harvesting and marketing season. According to him, priority passage for fruit-laden vehicles would help ensure timely deliveries to markets across the country, reduce post-harvest losses, ease congestion and strengthen the horticulture supply chain.

Naik appealed to the Traffic Police, National Highways Authority, Border Roads Organisation, Public Works Department and the civil administration to work in close coordination for round-the-clock monitoring of vulnerable highway stretches and immediate restoration of traffic whenever disruptions occur.

Expressing confidence in the leadership of the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister, he said the government has consistently accorded importance to the horticulture sector and hoped that timely directions would be issued to all concerned departments to facilitate smooth transportation of the Valley’s apple produce during the peak marketing season.

He reiterated that uninterrupted highway connectivity is crucial for protecting the livelihoods of horticulture-dependent families and sustaining one of Jammu & Kashmir’s largest economic sectors, while assuring the administration of JKPICCA’s full cooperation in ensuring a smooth apple harvesting and marketing season.
