GANDERBAL, AUGUST 10: Renowned grape expert and Krishi Ratna Anil G. Meher, popularly known as the ‘Grape Man of India’, interacted with grape growers in Ganderbal on Sunday, sharing practical insights on scientific cultivation, orchard management and improving grape quality and profitability.
The farmer-focused Grape Day was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ganderbal at Kralbagh in collaboration with J&K Bank, Shuhama. The programme brought together scientists, agricultural experts, university officials and a large number of grape growers.
Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension, SKUAST-Kashmir, was the chief guest, while Anil G. Meher attended as the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Meher drew on his extensive experience in grape cultivation and urged growers to adopt scientific and improved production practices to enhance productivity, fruit quality and farm returns.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining regular contact with agricultural experts and making effective use of technical guidance and institutional support available to farmers.
Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth highlighted the importance of direct interaction between farmers and scientists in addressing field-level challenges and accelerating the adoption of improved agricultural technologies.
She encouraged growers to embrace scientific practices for improving productivity, quality and profitability and assured them of continued technical support from SKUAST-Kashmir.
Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Malik, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Ganderbal, said KVKs play an important role in providing location-specific technical guidance and facilitating the transfer of scientific knowledge to farmers.
He emphasised that regular engagement with growers enables scientists to better understand field-level problems and develop practical solutions suited to local conditions.
Prof. Aroosa Khalil of the Division of Fruit Science, SKUAST-Kashmir, provided technical guidance on scientific grape cultivation, orchard management and recommended horticultural practices aimed at improving yield and quality.
She also interacted with growers and responded to their queries on various aspects of grape production.
Representing J&K Bank, Shuhama, Manager Ifrah Yaqoob reiterated the bank’s commitment to supporting the farming community and assured growers of financial assistance for their agricultural activities.
The programme provided grape growers an opportunity to directly discuss cultivation-related challenges with Meher, university scientists and agricultural officials.
The interaction concluded with an emphasis on strengthening farmer-scientist-institution linkages and promoting scientific, sustainable and profitable grape cultivation in Kashmir.
