SRINAGAR: The Chamber of Commerce and Industries Kashmir (CCIK) has opposed the 6.83 per cent average hike in power tariffs approved for Jammu and Kashmir, saying the move would impose an additional financial burden on both domestic and commercial consumers.
The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has approved an average 6.83 per cent increase in power tariffs for J&K, which will come into effect from September 1.
Expressing strong opposition to the decision, CCIK said the tariff hike comes at a time when people are already grappling with rising inflation and unemployment, while key sectors such as tourism and horticulture are facing challenges.
“At a time when unemployment is at a peak, inflation is biting hard and ordinary families are struggling to make ends meet, the government has imposed a 6.83 per cent power tariff hike,” CCIK said.
The chamber questioned the decision to raise power tariffs despite the economic difficulties being faced by people across Jammu and Kashmir.
“From free tariff promises of relief to higher bills, what happened to the promise?” it asked.
CCIK said it would strongly raise the issue and oppose the tariff hike, maintaining that the decision would further add to the hardships faced by the people.
“We will continue to stand with the people and fight against every decision that adds to their hardships,” the chamber said.
The CCIK appealed to the Omar Abdullah-led government to revoke the tariff order at the earliest, terming the hike “total injustice” to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
It also urged the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to look into the matter and intervene to ensure relief for consumers in J&K.
