364 MT consignment allegedly routed through UAE in violation of import ban; follows recent seizure of Pakistan-origin Guggul resin
Srinagar, Aug 5: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 364 metric tonnes (MT) of Pakistan-origin dry dates valued at around Rs 3 crore at Kandla Port after uncovering an alleged attempt to circumvent India’s ban on imports from Pakistan by routing the consignment through the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to the DRI, officers intercepted 13 containers carrying the dry dates during an intelligence-led operation. Although the goods were declared as originating from the UAE, investigations revealed that they had actually originated in Pakistan.
The agency said the consignment was first transported from Pakistan to Dubai, where it was shifted into another set of containers before being exported to India. Importers allegedly concealed the true origin of the goods and misdeclared the country of origin to evade restrictions on Pakistan-origin imports.
The entire consignment has been seized under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and further investigations are underway.
The latest action comes just a week after the DRI detected another alleged attempt to import about 14 MT of Pakistan-origin Guggul resin, valued at approximately Rs 1.4 crore, through Tuticorin Port. In that case, the consignment had been falsely declared as natural resin originating from Somalia and routed through Dubai.
Investigators found that the consignment consisted of Guggul resin (Commiphora resin), a species native to arid regions of India and Pakistan that is listed under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The DRI said forged documentation had been used to conceal the Pakistani origin of the shipment, and two persons were arrested in connection with the case.
The agency noted that, under the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023, as amended through a Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) notification issued on May 2, 2025, the direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan has been prohibited with effect from that date.
Officials said both the dry dates and Guggul resin consignments were found to be in violation of the import prohibition. The DRI said the seizures underscore its ongoing efforts to detect and dismantle organised smuggling networks, customs fraud, and other forms of illicit transnational trade.
