New Delhi, July 7: India’s expanding infrastructure sector is driving renewed interest in civil engineering, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) reporting growing participation by students from premier engineering institutions in its recruitment and internship programmes.
According to the NHAI, the country’s infrastructure-led growth has opened up new opportunities for engineering graduates, making civil engineering an increasingly preferred career choice, particularly among students from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
The authority said it recruits around 100 engineering professionals every year through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for technical positions. Successful candidates from IITs, NITs and other reputed institutions are appointed as Deputy Managers, reflecting increasing interest among top engineering graduates in careers related to national highway development.
To strengthen industry-academia collaboration, NHAI launched a structured internship programme in December 2025, beginning with a one-month winter internship for civil engineering students, followed by a six-month term internship. The programme offers a monthly stipend of Rs 20,000 and is aimed at providing practical exposure to students.
The authority said it further expanded its Summer Internship Programme in 2026, with 423 students joining internships across 125 NHAI field offices and 51 functional divisions at its headquarters. Participants included 59 students from IITs and 282 from NITs, indicating strong interest from leading technical institutions.
NHAI also highlighted a series of professional reforms intended to strengthen the engineering ecosystem. These include the introduction of fixed-cost Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to ensure fair compensation for engineering services and revised remuneration frameworks designed to attract experienced professionals as DPR and supervision consultants.
The authority said these initiatives are intended to bridge the gap between engineering education and professional practice while helping develop a skilled workforce to support the country’s expanding national highway network.
