Srinagar, June 7: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening research collaboration, academic exchanges and innovation, while creating new pathways for NIT students to pursue postgraduate studies at IIT Delhi.
The agreement was signed by Binod Kumar Kanaujia, Director of NIT Srinagar, and Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, under the IIT Delhi–NIT Education and Research Network Initiative, a nationwide programme designed to deepen cooperation among leading technical institutions across India.
The MoU was among 18 agreements signed by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi with various National Institutes of Technology on June 4, with the objective of promoting collaborative research, academic exchange, innovation, faculty development and institutional capacity building.
According to officials, the agreement establishes a broad framework for cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including joint research projects, student and faculty exchanges, early admission opportunities for NIT students into IIT Delhi’s Master’s and doctoral programmes, credit transfer mechanisms and sharing of academic resources and scholarly publications.
A key feature of the partnership is the provision for joint supervision of PhD, M.Tech and MSR students, allowing scholars from both institutions to benefit from shared expertise, mentorship and research infrastructure.
Under the agreement, faculty members from NIT Srinagar and IIT Delhi will collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects, while designated representatives from both institutions will oversee the implementation and monitoring of collaborative initiatives.
The MoU also introduces a structured student exchange programme that will enable students to participate in coursework, internships, research projects and other academic activities at the partner institution. Students participating in the programme will be designated as Special Exchange Students and will have opportunities to earn transferable academic credits.
In a significant academic initiative, the agreement creates an early admission pathway for meritorious NIT Srinagar students seeking admission to IIT Delhi’s M.Tech, MSR and PhD programmes.
Eligible B.Tech and M.Tech students with strong academic performance will be able to undertake research projects and academic work at IIT Delhi and may receive provisional admission offers without the need to qualify through GATE or other national-level entrance examinations, subject to performance-based evaluation.
The collaboration also includes provisions for credit transfer, credit sharing and advanced standing programmes. Under this arrangement, selected students may complete part of their undergraduate studies at IIT Delhi and subsequently earn an M.Tech degree within an accelerated timeframe through recognition of previously completed coursework.
NIT Srinagar was represented at the signing ceremony by Director Prof. Kanaujia and Registrar Atikur Rehman.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Kanaujia described the partnership as a transformative step that would open new opportunities for academic excellence, innovation and interdisciplinary research.
“This collaboration with IIT Delhi will significantly enhance opportunities for our students, researchers and faculty members. It reflects our commitment to building a vibrant research ecosystem and nurturing innovation-driven education in line with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020,” he said.
He added that the partnership would strengthen institutional capabilities while promoting greater academic mobility and collaborative problem-solving in emerging areas of science and technology.
IIT Delhi Director Prof. Banerjee highlighted the importance of building stronger networks among premier technical institutions to address national priorities through collaborative research and innovation.
He said such partnerships would contribute significantly to India’s aspirations of becoming a global leader in knowledge creation, technology development and innovation.
The event was attended by Somya Gupta, Joint Secretary in the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, who described the initiative as an important step towards creating a more integrated and collaborative higher education and research ecosystem in the country.
Registrar Prof. Rehman said the agreement marked a significant milestone in expanding institutional linkages and fostering a culture of academic cooperation.
“Such collaborations facilitate meaningful exchanges of knowledge, expertise and best practices. They will help both institutions address emerging technological and societal challenges while enhancing the quality of higher education, research output and capacity building,” he said.
The partnership is expected to strengthen research capabilities, enhance student mobility and create new opportunities for innovation-driven learning, further positioning NIT Srinagar within a growing national network of premier technical institutions.
