PM Modi urges nation to cut oil, gold purchases, encourages work-from-home, online classes

Vadodara, May 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday renewed his appeal for public cooperation in conserving resources and reducing non-essential expenditure amid growing economic uncertainty linked to the ongoing crisis and supply disruptions in West Asia.

Addressing a public gathering in Vadodara, the Prime Minister urged citizens to cut down on fuel consumption, postpone purchases of gold and luxury items, avoid unnecessary foreign expenditure and adopt practices such as work-from-home and online classes wherever possible.

He said the global situation in West Asia had created pressure on international energy markets and supply chains, affecting fuel availability and increasing economic uncertainty for many countries, including India.

Emphasising the need for collective responsibility, the Prime Minister appealed to people to use vehicles judiciously, avoid unnecessary travel and support efforts aimed at reducing fuel demand. He also encouraged businesses, educational institutions and offices to continue using digital platforms and remote working arrangements in situations where physical presence was not essential.

According to officials, the Prime Minister highlighted that such measures could help reduce the burden of rising energy costs and strengthen the country’s economic resilience during a period of global instability.

He also advised citizens to exercise restraint in discretionary spending, particularly on imported and non-essential goods, stating that careful financial planning and moderation would help both households and the broader economy navigate uncertain global conditions.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when tensions in West Asia have raised concerns over disruptions in crude oil supplies, volatility in global fuel prices and the potential impact on inflation and trade.

Government officials said India continues to closely monitor developments in the region while taking steps to ensure energy security and maintain stability in essential supplies.
