Eid-ul-Azha, social reform and the moral duty of Islamic clerics

By Mohammad Amin Mir

Among the two major festivals of Islam, Eid-ul-Azha occupies a place of immense spiritual, historical and moral significance. It is far more than a celebration associated with sacrifice, festive meals or social gatherings. At its core, the festival symbolizes obedience to Almighty Allah, moral discipline, compassion for humanity and the willingness to sacrifice personal desires for truth and righteousness.

The festival revives the timeless example of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), whose readiness to sacrifice everything for the command of Allah became an eternal symbol of faith, submission and moral courage. His willingness to obey the divine command and the unwavering faith of Prophet Ismail (AS) continue to inspire generations of believers across the world.

Yet in the contemporary world, the message of Eid-ul-Azha extends beyond ritual observance. Modern societies are confronting moral and social crises that threaten the stability of families and communities. One of the gravest challenges facing Kashmir today is the growing menace of drug addiction and substance abuse.

The spread of narcotics among youth has devastated countless families, weakened moral values, increased crime and endangered the future of an entire generation. A society once celebrated for spirituality, scholarship and cultural refinement now finds itself struggling against addiction infiltrating homes, educational institutions and public life.

At such a moment, the philosophy of Eid-ul-Azha acquires renewed urgency.

The essence of sacrifice in Islam is not confined to slaughtering an animal. The deeper meaning lies in sacrificing ego, greed, selfishness, arrogance and destructive habits for the sake of Allah and collective welfare. In this sense, Eid-ul-Azha becomes not only a religious festival but also a call for moral purification and social reform.

The Holy Qur’an makes this principle clear:

“It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your piety that reaches Him.”

This verse defines the true spirit of sacrifice. Allah does not seek ritual alone; rather, He values sincerity, discipline and righteousness.

Unfortunately, many societies have gradually reduced Eid-ul-Azha to ceremonial ritualism while neglecting its moral and social message. Animals are sacrificed, feasts are organized and celebrations continue, yet social evils remain unchallenged.

If sacrifice fails to inspire compassion, honesty, discipline and social responsibility, then its spirit remains incomplete.

The modern world urgently requires a revival of this deeper understanding, particularly at a time when youth are increasingly exposed to addiction, consumerism, moral confusion and emotional emptiness.

In Kashmir, the rising drug crisis demands collective action from families, educational institutions, civil society, government agencies and religious leadership alike. The battle against addiction cannot be won through policing and legal measures alone. While law enforcement may control supply temporarily, the roots of addiction lie far deeper — in hopelessness, social alienation, emotional distress and spiritual emptiness.

This is where the role of Islamic clerics becomes critically important.

Imams, preachers and religious scholars possess enormous moral influence within society. Their sermons shape public attitudes, guide community values and influence behavior across generations. Through mosques, religious gatherings, Friday sermons and educational institutions, their voice reaches millions of people.

That influence becomes even more powerful during Eid-ul-Azha when congregations gather in large numbers and hearts become spiritually receptive.

If religious leaders dedicate even part of their sermons to the dangers of drugs and the urgent need to protect youth, the impact could be transformative. Eid-ul-Azha provides an ideal platform to connect the philosophy of sacrifice with the need for a drug-free society.

The greatest sacrifice today may not simply be the sacrifice of animals but the sacrifice of addiction, despair, harmful company and destructive lifestyles.

Young people must be encouraged to replace hopelessness with faith, addiction with dignity and moral confusion with purpose. Families should be guided toward compassionate engagement with their children rather than silence or harsh condemnation.

Mosques, too, must evolve beyond being spaces limited only to ritual prayer. They must become centers of social guidance, counseling and emotional healing.

Islam categorically prohibits intoxicants because they weaken intellect, destroy families and distance human beings from prayer, morality and spiritual discipline. The teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) repeatedly emphasized protection of the mind, dignity and moral wellbeing.

Participation in the “Nasha Mukht” campaign is therefore not merely a social activity for Islamic scholars — it is a religious and moral responsibility.

Silence in times of social destruction can itself become dangerous.

When addiction spreads openly while religious discourse remains confined only to ritual matters, society begins to perceive the crisis as secondary. Yet Islam has never separated spirituality from social welfare. Early Islamic scholars actively confronted corruption, injustice and moral decline within society.

Contemporary religious leadership must demonstrate similar courage.

At the same time, the approach toward addiction must remain compassionate. Young people trapped in substance abuse are not enemies of society; many are victims of emotional isolation, anxiety, unemployment, broken family structures and lack of purpose.

Modern life increasingly promotes materialism without offering emotional or spiritual stability. Social media intensifies pressure and unrealistic expectations. Economic uncertainty deepens frustration. In such circumstances, vulnerable youth often seek temporary escape through intoxicants.

Religious guidance can provide an alternative foundation rooted in faith, discipline, community and meaning.

Islam also emphasizes mercy and rehabilitation. Recovering addicts should not be humiliated or socially abandoned. Stigma often discourages treatment and pushes individuals deeper into isolation.

Communities should instead encourage counseling, rehabilitation programs, vocational support and emotional healing. Religious scholars can play a major role in motivating individuals toward repentance, recovery and rebuilding their lives.

Families, too, carry enormous responsibility.

Eid-ul-Azha strengthens family bonds through collective worship, gatherings and shared meals. Parents should use this occasion to engage with children emotionally and spiritually. Many families fail to recognize early signs of addiction because of denial or lack of awareness.

Children who grow up feeling neglected, constantly criticized or emotionally disconnected become more vulnerable to harmful influences. Homes must therefore become spaces of trust, compassion, discipline and moral nurturing.

Educational institutions also have a crucial role to play. Schools, colleges and universities should work alongside religious institutions, doctors, psychologists and civil society organizations to raise awareness about addiction and mental health.

A coordinated approach combining spiritual guidance with scientific understanding is essential for meaningful reform.

The true spirit of Eid-ul-Azha ultimately lies in obedience, moral courage, compassion and collective responsibility. The sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) teaches believers to struggle against falsehood and temptation in every era.

Today, the challenge before Kashmir is not only ritual sacrifice but the larger moral struggle against addiction, hopelessness and social decay.

The Islamic clerics of Kashmir stand at a defining moment. Their leadership can remain confined to traditional ceremonial roles or evolve into a transformative force for social healing and moral reform.

Every mosque can become a center of awareness. Every Eid sermon can become a call for protecting youth and strengthening families. Every Imam can consider the wellbeing of society part of his religious mission.

The future generation is watching. Families are searching for guidance. Society is waiting for moral leadership.

Eid-ul-Azha reminds humanity that every generation faces its own test of sacrifice. The test before contemporary society is whether it possesses the courage to sacrifice silence, complacency and indifference in order to protect its future.

Only then can the true spirit of Eid-ul-Azha illuminate hearts, homes and society.
