Budgam Admin Reviews Measures to Curb Illegal Mining, Strengthen Enforcement

Budgam, May 18: The Budgam administration on Sunday held an inter-departmental district-level meeting to review and strengthen regulatory and monitoring mechanisms related to mineral extraction and transportation across the district.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Athar Aamir Khan, who reviewed the existing enforcement framework and assessed the functioning of departments involved in mineral regulation.

During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner directed the Irrigation and Flood Control Department to maintain strict vigil over Nallah Sukhnag, Doodhganga, Shaliganga, and other water bodies in the district to prevent illegal extraction of minerals.

The District Mineral Officer (DMO), Budgam, was instructed to strengthen vigilance mechanisms and ensure real-time monitoring across the district. The Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), Budgam, was directed to initiate strict action against vehicles and machinery involved in illegal mineral extraction and transportation activities.

Emphasising a zero-tolerance policy, the Deputy Commissioner said illegal mining and unauthorized transportation of minerals would not be tolerated under any circumstances. He directed all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to closely monitor incidents of illegal mining within their jurisdictions and ensure prompt legal action against violators.

The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department was also directed to monitor road infrastructure affected by overloaded vehicles and install checkpoints and barricades at vulnerable locations. The department was further asked to coordinate with enforcement agencies to prevent damage to public infrastructure caused by illegal transportation of minerals.

The Deputy Commissioner instructed all concerned departments to ensure time-bound implementation of decisions taken during the meeting and submit regular progress reports for review. He also stressed the need for coordinated enforcement drives by all stakeholder departments and said accountability would be fixed in cases of negligence or lapses in enforcement.

He stated that the measures are aimed at strengthening governance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and protecting the natural resources of the district.

The meeting was attended by Additional District Development Commissioner Vivek Agarwal, Additional Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Assistant Commissioner Revenue Budgam, all SDMs, Divisional Forest Officer, Executive Engineer I&FC, District Mineral Officer, ARTO, representatives of the R&B Department, and other concerned officers.
