Three commercial ships hit in Strait of Hormuz today; oil prices rise again

Three civilian vessels were struck by projectiles in separate incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby Persian Gulf on Wednesday, according to alerts issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

In a series of reports released earlier in the day, the maritime security agency said the vessels were targeted by unknown projectiles, raising fresh concerns over the safety of one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

According to the UKMTO, a container ship was struck in one of the incidents. Authorities said the vessel sustained damage but the crew remained safe, and no casualties were reported.

In a second attack, a cargo vessel was hit by another unidentified projectile, which triggered a fire onboard. The situation forced the crew to abandon the ship, although initial reports indicated that the personnel were able to evacuate safely.

A third incident involved a bulk carrier, which was also struck by a projectile. Officials said the crew was unharmed.

The attacks come amid rising regional tensions and have immediately affected global energy markets. Oil prices jumped sharply following news of the incidents, reflecting concerns about potential disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — a passage through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply is transported.
