Centre Reviews Energy, Shipping Situation Amid West Asia Crisis

Ziraat Times Team Report

New Delhi, March 25: The Government of India on Tuesday said petrol, diesel and LPG supplies remain adequate across the country, even as it continues to monitor the evolving situation in West Asia and its possible impact on energy and maritime operations.

At an inter-ministerial media briefing held at the National Media Centre, senior officials from the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, External Affairs, and Ports, Shipping and Waterways outlined steps being taken to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply, safeguard Indian nationals abroad and maintain stable shipping operations.

Petrol Pumps Operating Normally

Officials said all retail fuel outlets are functioning normally and adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are available nationwide. Refineries are operating at high capacity with sufficient crude inventories to maintain supply.

While panic buying was reported in some areas due to rumours, the government reiterated that there is no shortage and urged citizens not to believe misinformation.

Domestic LPG production at refineries has also been increased to support consumption. The government said it continues to give top priority to domestic LPG and piped natural gas (PNG) supply, particularly for households and essential sectors.

Push for PNG Expansion and New Distribution Order

The government has notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act to provide a time-bound framework for nationwide pipeline expansion. The move aims to accelerate PNG network growth, improve last-mile connectivity and support the transition to cleaner fuels.

Officials said 9,046 new PNG connections were reported across 110 geographical areas in a single day, reflecting ongoing expansion of city gas distribution networks. City Gas Distribution entities have been asked to prioritise PNG connections for commercial establishments such as restaurants, hotels and canteens, as well as institutions like schools, hostels and community kitchens.

LPG Supply and Allocation

Despite disruptions caused by the geopolitical situation and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the government said LPG delivery to households continues normally and no distributor has reported shortages.

To support businesses and institutions, the Centre has increased allocation of commercial LPG supplies to states. Currently, 26 States and Union Territories have issued allocation orders for non-domestic LPG, while public sector oil marketing companies are supplying the remaining areas.

Since March 14, about 22,268 metric tonnes of commercial LPG has been lifted across the country.

Kerosene Allocation and State Role

An additional 48,000 kilolitres of kerosene has been allocated to states and UTs beyond regular quotas. Authorities said states have been asked to identify district-level distribution points to ensure smooth supply.

Under the Essential Commodities Act, state governments are responsible for regulating the supply of petrol, diesel and LPG and taking action against hoarding and black marketing. District collectors and food and civil supplies officials are conducting regular enforcement drives.

Enforcement Against Hoarding

Officials said enforcement operations are underway across several states to curb hoarding and illegal sale of LPG cylinders. More than 2,700 raids were conducted recently, leading to the seizure of around 2,000 cylinders. Additionally, over 1,700 surprise inspections were carried out by oil marketing companies.

So far, authorities have registered over 650 FIRs and arrested 155 individuals in connection with such violations.

Public Advisory on Energy Use

The government urged citizens to avoid panic buying and rely only on official information. Consumers have been advised to book LPG refills digitally, reduce unnecessary visits to distributors and conserve energy in daily usage. Authorities are also encouraging the use of alternative fuels such as PNG, electric or induction cooktops to reduce LPG demand.

Indian Seafarers Safe, Repatriation Efforts Continue

Providing an update on maritime operations, officials said all Indian seafarers currently in the western Persian Gulf region are safe. About 20 Indian-flagged vessels with around 540 Indian crew members remain in the area, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

The Directorate General of Shipping has facilitated the safe return of more than 635 Indian seafarers so far.

Return of Indian Nationals From the Region

The government also said the overall flight situation from West Asia is gradually improving. Since February 28, around 4,26,000 passengers have returned to India from the region through more than 2,100 flights, including scheduled and special services.

Indian missions across the Gulf and West Asia continue to operate 24×7 helplines and are assisting students, seafarers and other Indian nationals with travel, documentation and consular services.

Officials said the government is closely monitoring developments in the region and will continue to take steps to ensure energy security, safe maritime operations and the well-being of Indian citizens abroad.
