Centre Issues Model Safety Guidelines for Adventure Tourism

Ziraat Times News Desk

New Delhi, Mar 17: The Government of India has introduced a model regulatory framework to enhance safety in the adventure tourism sector, while placing the responsibility of enforcement on states and Union Territories.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India, has formulated Model Adventure Safety Guidelines aimed at standardising safety practices across the country.

The guidelines have been circulated to all states and Union Territories for adoption, with a view to establishing a comprehensive framework for safer conduct of adventure tourism activities.

States Asked to Enforce Safety Norms

The Centre has urged states and UTs to maintain strict oversight of adventure tourism operations and ensure compliance with safety regulations and licensing requirements by all operators.

Officials said the move is intended to strengthen accountability and reduce risks associated with high-adrenaline activities such as trekking, rafting, and mountaineering.

No Central Study or Database Planned

The government, however, clarified that it has not conducted any study to identify high-risk adventure tourism destinations or activities in the country.

It also stated that there is no proposal at present to create a centralized database to track accidents, casualties, or safety violations linked to adventure tourism.

The disclosure indicates that while policy guidelines are being standardised at the national level, monitoring and data collection mechanisms will continue to remain largely decentralised.
