New Delhi: The Ministry of Education on Tuesday organised a high-level session titled “Ministry of Education – Pushing the Frontier of AI in India” at Bharat Mandapam as part of the ongoing India AI Impact Summit 2026, outlining the government’s roadmap to integrate artificial intelligence across school education, higher education, skilling and research ecosystems.
The session was attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of State for Education & Skill Development (Independent Charge) Jayant Chaudhary, along with senior officials, academic leaders, researchers and startup founders working in AI-driven education technologies.
Among those present were Secretary, School Education & Literacy, Sanjay Kumar; Secretary, Higher Education, Dr Vineet Joshi; Director, IIT Madras, Prof V. Kamakoti; and representatives from leading technology and investment institutions.
AI Central to India’s Knowledge Ambition
Addressing the gathering, Pradhan described the Summit as a pathbreaking initiative envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accelerate India’s growth in artificial intelligence. He said India’s rapid technological adoption has positioned it as a nation to watch in the global AI ecosystem.
The Minister emphasised that artificial intelligence would play a transformative role in advancing India’s ambition of becoming a global knowledge superpower and achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He underscored the interconnectedness of “AI in education and education in AI,” urging students and young professionals to leverage AI for innovation and nation-building.
Highlighting the role of youth, Pradhan noted that the current generation of innovators is thinking differently and must harness emerging technologies to create scalable, inclusive solutions.
Structured Integration Across the Education Spectrum
Jayant Chaudhary said deliberations at the Summit reflected a structured approach to embedding AI across foundational learning, skilling, research and global academic leadership. He added that the Ministry of Education and Skill India pavilions at the Summit showcased practical, scalable, India-first AI solutions translating policy vision into on-ground implementation.
Officials outlined how, over the past decade, the Ministry has laid the groundwork for AI-enabled education through digital public infrastructure, policy frameworks, institutional reforms and capacity-building initiatives.
Following a Budget announcement last year, the government established a Centre of Excellence in AI for Education at IIT Madras. The Ministry has also held consultations with academia, industry and civil society to develop a roadmap for AI integration. Recently, Pradhan chaired the two-day “Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026,” bringing together stakeholders to advance responsible AI-driven transformation in education.
Policy to Practice
The session highlighted India’s transition from policy design to large-scale implementation, leveraging Centres of Excellence, teacher training programmes, curriculum integration and partnerships with industry and startups.
The panel featured leaders from academia, industry and venture capital, including Dr Sridhar Vembu (Zoho Corporation), Dr Vibhu Mittal (Inflection), Rajan Anandan (Peak XV Partners), Prof Manindra Agrawal (IIT Kanpur), Prof V. Kamakoti (IIT Madras) and Prof Sunita Sarawagi (IIT Bombay). The discussion was moderated by Prof Manoj S. Gaur, Director, IIT Jammu.
Deliberations focused on aligning governance frameworks, national learning platforms and indigenous AI innovation to improve education outcomes. Speakers stressed the importance of systemic interventions rather than isolated pilot projects, emphasising responsible deployment of frontier AI models at scale.
Strengthening Collaboration
The session concluded with a call to deepen collaboration among government, academia and industry to shape India’s national AI-in-education roadmap. Participants agreed that aligning policy, institutions and technology would be essential to ensuring sustainable and equitable impact across the country’s vast education ecosystem.
The Ministry said the initiative marks a significant step in positioning India as a global leader in AI-driven education reform.
