New Delhi, Jan 14: Jammu and Kashmir has secured the second position among Small States, North Eastern States and Union Territories in the Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024, released by NITI Aayog on Tuesday, highlighting the Union Territory’s growing export readiness and institutional capacity.
The Export Preparedness Index 2024 places Uttarakhand first, followed by Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, and Goa in the category of Small States, North Eastern States and Union Territories. The index assesses the ability of states and UTs to develop competitive, resilient and inclusive export ecosystems.
Releasing the fourth edition of the index, NITI Aayog said the EPI provides an evidence-based framework to evaluate export preparedness at the subnational level, aligned with India’s goal of achieving USD 1 trillion in merchandise exports by 2030 and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. The first edition of the index was published in August 2020.
NITI Aayog CEO said India’s export trajectory is increasingly shaped by the preparedness of states and districts, stressing the need to strengthen export infrastructure, improve cost competitiveness, build robust institutions and ensure predictable policy environments. Member NITI Aayog Dr Arvind Virmani underlined the role of states and UTs in sustaining export momentum by identifying strengths, addressing structural gaps and focusing on product quality for global competitiveness.
The Export Preparedness Index 2024 is structured around four pillars—Export Infrastructure, Business Ecosystem, Policy and Governance, and Export Performance ways—covering 13 sub-pillars and 70 indicators. The latest edition introduces new dimensions such as macroeconomic stability, cost competitiveness, human capital, access to finance and the MSME ecosystem.
States and UTs have been classified into Leaders, Challengers and Aspirers to enable peer learning, with greater emphasis placed on districts as the core units of export competitiveness.
Among large states, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh emerged as the top performers.
