Prof. (Dr.) Hamid Ali Durrani, former Head of the Department of Medicine and Gastroenterology at Government Medical College, Srinagar, passed away this evening at Khyber Hospital. He was 92 and remained active until November 2025. His son, Dr Sarfaraz, along with family members, shifted his mortal remains to their residence at Shivpora, Batwara.
Prof. Durrani began his illustrious medical career as a Resident Doctor at King George’s Medical University. He enriched his professional journey through advanced exposure at the American College of Gastroenterology and academic visits to the University of Southern California, the University of Chicago, Juntendo University, and the University of Toronto.
A distinguished luminary and a highly accomplished medico, Prof. Durrani was a pioneer of gastroenterology in Jammu and Kashmir. He was the first to introduce endoscopy in the region, marking a historic milestone in medical practice in the Valley. A clinician par excellence and a teacher par excellence, he was immensely popular among students and equally respected by colleagues and faculty alike.
Known for his generosity and compassion, he would go out of his way to help students whenever and wherever required. His contribution to medical education in Jammu and Kashmir remains outstanding and enduring. He will always be remembered for his grace, elegance, magnanimity, and nobility—an epitome of honour and dignity.
A rare legend and a towering personality, Prof. Hamid Ali Durrani has left indelible footprints for posterity. His passing has created a void that will be difficult to fill.
