J&K Govt approves 18% hike in public transport fares

Srinagar, Dec 24: The Jammu & Kashmir Government has approved an 18 percent increase in public transport fares across the Union Territory. The revised fares will come into effect from January 1, 2026, after the Transport Department issues a formal notification.

The decision was taken following consultations between senior officials of the Finance and Transport Departments and representatives of transporters’ associations. Officials said the fare revision was overdue, as transport fares had not been increased for nearly five years despite rising fuel prices and operational costs.

The hike will apply to all categories of public transport, including buses and minibuses, operating in Jammu and Kashmir. A detailed fare chart will be notified separately.

Authorities said the move aims to ensure the financial viability of public transport services, while assuring strict action against overcharging.
