J&K Cabinet to Meet Today; Flood Relief Policy, Bank Infusion, Pay Revisions on Agenda

Srinagar, December 22 — The Jammu & Kashmir Cabinet is scheduled to meet today, with the meeting to be chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to take up several important policy and administrative matters, including a proposed land allotment policy for flood-affected families.

According to official sources, the Cabinet is expected to deliberate on a policy to allot five marlas of land to people rendered landless due to floods. The move is aimed at providing permanent rehabilitation to affected families and enabling them to rebuild their homes and livelihoods.

Financial support for cooperative banks

The Cabinet is also likely to approve the infusion of ₹118 crore into two cooperative banks operating in Jammu and Kashmir. The proposed capital support is intended to strengthen the financial health of the cooperative banking sector and improve credit availability, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

Among other key items on the agenda is a proposal to upgrade the pay level of Village Level Workers (VLWs), acknowledging their expanded role in grassroots governance and implementation of development schemes.

The Cabinet is also expected to consider a proposal to re-designate District Programme Officers (DPOs) as Block Development Officers (BDOs) as part of an administrative restructuring aimed at streamlining development administration at the block level.

Significance of the meeting

The meeting is being viewed as significant, as it combines relief-oriented measures, financial sector strengthening, and administrative reforms, reflecting the government’s focus on post-disaster rehabilitation and governance efficiency.

Official decisions are expected to be announced after the conclusion of the Cabinet meeting later in the day.
