New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked mobile users across the country to report spam calls and messages through its official TRAI DND App, noting that simply blocking numbers on individual phones does not stop scammers from targeting others.
In an advisory issued on Monday, TRAI said that more than 21 lakh mobile numbers and nearly one lakh entities involved in spam and fraudulent communication were disconnected or blacklisted in the past year. The regulator said these large-scale enforcement actions were possible only because citizens submitted reports through the DND App, enabling authorities to trace, verify, and permanently disable offending numbers.
TRAI emphasised that blocking a number on personal devices only prevents it from reaching that user. “It does not stop the spammer from contacting thousands of others using new numbers,” the advisory noted.
Public advisory issued for telecom users
TRAI urged mobile users to:
-
Download the TRAI DND App from official app stores
-
Report spam SMS and calls using the app instead of blocking them on phones
-
Avoid sharing personal or banking details over calls, messages or social media
-
Disconnect immediately if a call appears suspicious or threatening
-
Report cyber fraud through the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) or cybercrime.gov.in
-
Report misuse of telecom resources via the Sanchar Saathi “Chakshu” feature
