Pampore: The Department of Wildlife Protection, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, has issued an advisory urging the public to refrain from poaching, trading, or using Indian Roller (Coracias benghalensis) and Kingfisher species for decorative or religious purposes, warning that such acts are punishable under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The advisory, issued by the Office of the Block Officer, Wetland Division Pampore, follows reports received by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) regarding incidents of poaching and illegal trade of these protected bird species from different parts of the country, particularly during certain festival seasons.
Both the Indian Roller and Kingfisher are listed under Schedule-II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which makes hunting, trapping, capturing, keeping, selling, or trading of these birds or their body parts a cognizable and non-bailable offence. Violators face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to ₹25,000, or both.
The department has advised that no person shall capture, keep, sell, or use Indian Roller or Kingfisher birds for any purpose. It also discouraged the decorative or religious use of these birds or their feathers, calling it illegal and punishable by law.
Citizens have been urged to report any information regarding poaching, trapping, possession, or sale of these birds to the concerned authorities or the nearest office of the Wildlife Protection Department. The advisory also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and cooperate in the conservation of these valuable species, which are an integral part of India’s natural heritage.
People can share information about illegal wildlife activities by contacting the Block Officer, Pampore Wetlands, on 6005863793, 7780954654, or 7006557574.
The Wildlife Department said the advisory has been issued in the interest of wildlife conservation and public awareness to curb illegal trade and safeguard avian biodiversity across Jammu and Kashmir.
