Rauf Tramboo appointed chairperson,  National Selection Committee for Winter Games

Srinagar: In a significant recognition for Jammu and Kashmir’s winter sports community, Rauf Tramboo, President of the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir (WGAJK), has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Selection Committee constituted by the Olympic Ad-Hoc Committee for Ski and Snowboard India.

The nine-member selection committee, headed by Tramboo, has been tasked with identifying talent and selecting athletes for Alpine, Snowboard, and Nordic skiing competitions in upcoming international events. The committee includes Ludar Thakur (Vice Chairperson), Gul Mustafa Dev and Chuni Lal Thakur (Olympians and eminent athletes), Farhat Ali Naik, Rakesh Ranjan, Pradeep Khandre, Mudassir Ahmad Mir, and Sadiq Ali as members.

A letter from the Office of the Chairman, IOA Ad-Hoc Committee for Ski and Snowboard India, confirmed the appointments, stating that the committee’s role would be to “identify talent and select athletes for international Alpine, Snowboard, and Nordic skiing events.” The letter also noted that Tramboo’s “expertise and experience in the field” would be crucial in ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.

Tramboo, a veteran of the sport, began his alpine skiing career in the 1970s and later transitioned into backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering. As a founding member of the Jammu & Kashmir Ski Mountaineering Association (JKSMA), he participated in several expeditions, including the International Ski Mountaineering Expedition to Mt. Kolahoi in 1986.

Expressing his gratitude, Tramboo said, “It is a proud moment for all of us at WGAJK that three members of the national selection committee hail from Jammu and Kashmir. We are committed to identifying and nurturing the best winter sports talent in the country.”

The formation of this committee marks a major step toward strengthening India’s representation in international winter sports events.
