Srinagar: National Conference legislator from Bijbehara, Dr. Bashir Ahmad Veeri, on Tuesday raised a series of critical public issues in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, urging the government to take urgent measures to address unemployment, rationalize reservation policies, and revive the agro-based and tourism sectors.

Speaking during the session, Dr. Veeri said that rising unemployment has emerged as one of the most serious challenges facing the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. He called upon the administration to formulate a comprehensive employment policy aimed at creating long-term livelihood opportunities and reducing the dependency on government jobs.

On the issue of reservation rationalisation, Dr. Veeri voiced concern over the growing resentment among sections of students and job aspirants. “I express solidarity with the general category students who have been approaching me regarding their concerns. The legislature is the most powerful platform to raise people’s issues, and I will continue to use it to seek fairness and balance in policy decisions,” he said.

Emphasizing the need to revive agro-based industries, Dr. Veeri said that strengthening agriculture, horticulture, and allied sectors could serve as a sustainable solution to unemployment. “A strong agro-economy can create jobs, support small enterprises, and ensure economic stability in rural areas,” he added.

The Bijbehara MLA also expressed concern over the setback to the tourism industry, particularly after the recent incident in Pahalgam, noting that it has adversely affected visitor confidence and local livelihoods dependent on the sector.

Dr. Veeri urged the government to restore public trust and extend support to affected stakeholders through a targeted revival plan for the tourism and hospitality sectors.
