NC demands Waqf Board Chairperson’s dismissal; condemns ‘vandalism’ at Dargah yesterday

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Saturday demanded the immediate dismissal of Waqf Board Chairperson Dr. Darakshan Andrabi, accusing her of “misusing” the national emblem and showing “utter disregard for constitutional norms.”

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters Nawai Subah Complex in Srinagar, NC leaders including MLA Hazratbal and party spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, along with other party legislators, strongly condemned the vandalism of erasing the emblem at the Dargah and also what they termed as “unethical and unconstitutional actions” by the Waqf Board.

The leaders alleged that the Waqf Board under Ms Andrabi had not only “arbitrarily used the national emblem for personal projection” but had also been involved in acts that hurt the sentiments of devotees. They referred in particular to the reported erasing of the national emblem at a shrine complex, an act they said symbolized “disrespect and misuse of national symbols.”

“National symbols are not to be toyed with. They belong to the people of this country, not to any individual or institution to use at will. What has happened under the Waqf Board chairperson is unacceptable and requires immediate action from the authorities,” said Tanvir Sadiq while addressing reporters.

The NC leaders demanded that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha intervene in the matter and ensure that Dr. Darakshan Andrabi is removed from her position with immediate effect. They further sought a probe into the alleged irregularities and misuse of power within the Waqf Board, insisting that the body be restored to its “original purpose of serving people and protecting the sanctity of religious spaces.”

The press conference also witnessed party leaders expressing concern over the “growing politicisation” of the Waqf Board. “The Waqf Board is a sacred institution meant for managing religious endowments. Reducing it to a personal fiefdom through misuse of national symbols and arbitrary decisions is against both religion and law,” one of the MLAs remarked.
