Srinagar: Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) has warmly welcomed the facilitation of apple transportation through train services in view of the frequent closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

KTMF President Mohammad Yaseen Khan extended his  gratitude to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for personally intervening and ensuring that the horticulture sector, particularly apple growers and traders is provided with a viable alternative to keep the supply chain active. “This timely decision has come as a huge relief for our growers and traders at a time when the Valley’s economic backbone is at stake. The move will not only prevent massive losses but also safeguard thousands of livelihoods associated with the apple industry,” Khan stated.

Khan further stressed the importance of increasing the frequency of logistic trains and emphasized that dedicated rail services must be made operational for horticulture produce. KTMF maintained that uninterrupted and reliable rail connectivity should be institutionalized as a permanent arrangement to avoid dependence solely on the highway which often remains disrupted due to weather and landslides.

“The apple industry is the pride of Kashmir’s economy. We appeal to the government to prioritize logistic support and strengthen rail connectivity on a long-term basis to ensure smooth, hassle-free and cost-effective transportation of apples and other essentials,” Khan added.
