Jammu: A disturbing incident in Jammu has sparked widespread public outrage after a man accused of theft was publicly humiliated by being paraded with a garland of shoes and made to sit on the bonnet of a moving police vehicle on Tuesday.

The accused, a resident of Kashmir, was apprehended outside a hospital in the Bakshi Nagar area by police and local youth. The man was reportedly identified by a citizen who had been reportedly robbed of ₹40,000 while buying medicines for a patient earlier this week.

According to SHO Bakshi Nagar, Azad Manhas, the accused resisted apprehension and allegedly attacked the complainant during the confrontation. A police patrol team noticed the scuffle and, after a chase, managed to catch the suspect.

However, what followed has raised serious questions about procedural conduct and human rights. Videos and photos circulated widely on social media show the man—his shirt torn—paraded through the area with a garland made of shoes around his neck. He was also briefly made to sit on the bonnet of the moving vehicle.

The SHO confirmed that some local youth, who joined the police in chasing the accused, placed the footwear garland on him. This is the second such incident in Jammu this month, raising concerns over a growing trend of mob-influenced justice and humiliation tactics.

Social media platforms were flooded with posts condemning the act. Netizens, especially from Kashmir, expressed anger over what they termed a “blatant violation of human dignity and law.” “No law of the land permits this kind of treatment,” one user wrote, while others questioned why due process was abandoned in favour of public shaming.
