Kashmir Fruit Growers Union hails Srinagar rail link as “historic milestone”

Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union, the apex elected body representing fruit growers and dealers across Jammu & Kashmir, has welcomed the inauguration of the Katra-Srinagar rail link, calling it a “historic and transformative milestone” for the Union Territory’s economy and connectivity.

In a statement issued today to Ziraat Times, Chairman Bashir Ahmad Basheer said the launch of the direct rail connectivity between Katra and Srinagar would serve as a “lifeline for J&K’s economy”, particularly the horticulture sector, and ease travel for thousands of locals and tourists.

“This new railway network is more than just infrastructure — it is a bridge of opportunity. With enhanced accessibility, Kashmir is likely to witness a major surge in tourist arrivals,” Basheer said. “For fruit growers, especially during the off-season months, the railway will provide a cost-effective, all-weather mode of transport for produce, while also reducing road congestion and transport costs.”

The union, which represents growers from across major horticulture belts including Srinagar, Sopore, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama, and Kulgam, expressed hope that this vital connectivity will strengthen trade, tourism, and logistics across the region.

The Union also urged the government to consider launching direct train services between Delhi and Srinagar, along with a dedicated goods train to support horticultural trade. “Such steps will open up fresh avenues of economic opportunity for both the people of Jammu & Kashmir and the Indian Railways,” the statement noted.

Extending congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union said this long-cherished dream finally taking shape reflects the Centre’s commitment to the development of Jammu & Kashmir. The Union added that direct railway links to metropolitan cities would significantly boost the region’s horticulture-driven economy.
