J&K Police launch inquiry after viral video shows humiliation of accused man in Jammu

Jammu: The Jammu & Kashmir Police have initiated a formal inquiry after a video went viral on social media showing a man—partially stripped and garlanded with slippers—being paraded in public and made to sit on the bonnet of a police vehicle by personnel from Bakshi Nagar Police Station.

The incident took place on June 24 in the jurisdiction of Bakshi Nagar, following the man’s apprehension in connection with a theft case. The video, widely circulated online, sparked outrage and condemnation from citizens and human rights groups alike.

Taking cognizance of the incident, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Joginder Singh (IPS), has termed the conduct of the police personnel involved as “unprofessional and unbecoming of members of a disciplined organization.” In an official order issued on Monday, he stated that the act warrants stern departmental action.

In order to establish the actual facts, a preliminary enquiry has been entrusted to the SDPO City North, Jammu, who has been asked to submit a detailed report within a week’s time.

The order acknowledges that the actions seen in the video are not in accordance with the professional standards expected from law enforcement and have tarnished the image of the police.

The SSP’s order has been copied to SP City North, SDPO City West, and other relevant officers for necessary action.

Citizens have welcomed the initiation of the inquiry but are demanding strict accountability and justice. Several netizens and civil society members have pointed out that no law allows public humiliation of suspects, regardless of the charges they face.
