Bakerwal Woman’s Murder Sparks Outrage in Kashmir, Politicians and Civil Society Demand Justice

Srinagar: Widespread outrage and grief have gripped Kashmir following the horrific murder of a woman from the Bakerwal community in Nishat area of Srinagar on Sunday. The woman, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons, was reportedly sexually assaulted and killed, sending shockwaves across the valley.

The Jammu & Kashmir Police acted swiftly, arresting the key suspects, who are currently under interrogation. Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and that justice will be delivered without delay.

The victim was laid to rest today in her native village in Kangan, Ganderbal district, amid an outpouring of sorrow and anger. Hundreds, including members of the Gujjar-Bakerwal and Kashmiri speaking communities  participated in her funeral, demanding accountability and harsh punishment for the perpetrators.

Political leaders from across the spectrum and prominent civil society members have strongly condemned the crime. They called for exemplary punishment to serve as a deterrent against such heinous acts and demanded urgent steps to protect women, especially those from marginalized communities.

Senior Narional Conference leader and MP Mian Altand has demanded fast track investigation, exemplary punishment for those involved in this heinous crime.

“A Bakerwal girl has been brutally assaulted and raped, leading to her death, by two men in Nishat area of Srinagar. I demand fast track investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment to the perpetrators.” Mian Meher Ali, MLA from Kangan constituency said on social media.

Former Chief Ministers, local MLAs, and activists took to social media to express solidarity with the victim’s family. “This is a crime against humanity. The culprits must face the full force of the law,” said one senior political figure. Rights groups have also raised concerns about the vulnerability of nomadic communities and have urged authorities to ensure their protection, especially during seasonal migrations.

The incident has once again raised serious questions about women’s safety in Kashmir and the need for stronger mechanisms to prevent sexual violence. Protests and candlelight vigils are being planned by various youth and rights groups in the coming days to press for swift justice.

Meanwhile, police have appealed for calm and assured full transparency in the investigation, reiterating their commitment to bringing all responsible to justice. The administration has promised close monitoring of the case and support to the victim’s family.

According to officials, the police have registered a case and confirmed that one accused has been arrested. “We are investigating the matter and have taken swift action. Relevant sections of law have been applied,” a police officer said, without divulging further details.
