New Delhi: In a significant outreach effort to boost market connectivity for horticulture produce from Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Jeelani Zargar, Director Horticulture Planning and Marketing, conducted an extensive visit to Azadpur Mandi, Delhi—one of Asia’s largest wholesale fruit and vegetable markets.

During the visit, Mr. Zargar held detailed interactions with buyers, commission agents, and stakeholders, addressing key issues such as transportation hurdles, the need for transparent trade practices, and the promotion of online trading through the e-NAM portal to benefit growers and traders from Jammu and Kashmir.

A marathon meeting was later held with various representatives, especially members of the Kashmir Apple Merchants Association (KAMA), where the Director strongly advocated for buyer-seller meets to build direct market linkages between local J&K growers and buyers from other states. The move is expected to help in achieving better price realization and reduce the role of middlemen.

Mr. Zargar also visited the Deputy Director’s office at Shalimar Bagh, where he reviewed the functioning of the Kishan Ghar and assessed the progress of developmental works related to the extension block.

Fruit growers see this visit as a strategic effort to integrate Jammu and Kashmir’s horticulture sector more closely with national markets and to ensure that growers receive the maximum benefit from their produce through digital and physical marketing reforms.
