Srinagar: Kashmir’s spiritual and iconic Jama Masjid, a central site of worship for Kashmiri Muslims, will remain closed on the revered night of Shab-e-Qadr (Lailatul Qadr), authorities have informed the mosque’s managing body, the Auqaf, today. The decision has ignited widespread condemnation from local communities, with critics calling it an “insensitive” move that deprives thousands of devotees of a centuries-old spiritual tradition.
According to reports, Jammu & Kashmir administration directed the Auqaf Committee to seal the mosque ahead of the holy night, prohibiting congregational prayers (shab) and supplications. Shab-e-Qadr, observed during one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan, marks the revelation of the Holy Quran and is dedicated to intense worship and seeking divine forgiveness.
