Govt examining GPO-Convent School bridge proposal in Srinagar

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday said it is examining a proposal to address the issue of a missing motorable bridge near GPO/Convent School in Srinagar, after the initial plan was altered due to technical constraints.

In response to a query by MLA Lal Chowk in the Legislative Assembly, the Public Works (R&B) Department, said a motorable bridge was initially planned and its foundation laid, but it was eventually constructed as a footbridge.

The department cited a communication from the Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control Kashmir, dated April 2, 2016, which cancelled the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the project.

According to officials, the NOC was withdrawn due to concerns that the bridge’s height would require raising road levels on both the Convent and GPO sides by approximately 2.5 meters, making it impractical for vehicular movement.

Asked whether the government intends to convert the footbridge into a motorable bridge or construct an alternative bridge parallel to Abdullah Bridge to ease traffic congestion,

The department said the proposal is under examination to see whether the footbridge will be converted into a motorable bridge or an alternative bridge parallel to Abdullah Bridge is constructed to ease traffic congestion.

The issue has gained public attention due to persistent traffic congestion in the area, with commuters demanding a long-term solution to the bottleneck near GPO and Convent School. —(KNO)
