Strict action against illegal hunting: Wildlife Dept issues warning

Srinagar: The Department of Wildlife Protection has issued a stern warning against the illegal hunting of migratory birds in and around wetlands in the valley.

In a public notice issued, a copy of which also lies with the department has stated that such activities were a severe violation under Section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act, and violators will face strict legal consequences.

“Hunting of migratory birds in and around the wetlands is a serious offense under Section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act. Strict action will be taken against violators under Sections 50 and 51 of the Act,” states the notice.

The notice has outlined that offenders could face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh, or both, depending on the severity of the offense.

Additionally, the notice states that individuals carrying firearms within a 10-kilometer radius of any Wildlife Sanctuary or National Park are required to register their weapons with the Wildlife Protection Department, as per Section 34 of the Act.

“It has come to our notice that many offenders claim ignorance of these regulations,” the notice stated.

The department urged the public to act responsibly and refrain from engaging in illegal hunting.

“By virtue of this notice, the public is strongly advised to refrain from engaging in any form of illegal hunting of migratory birds. Violators will face strict legal action without exception,” reads the notice. —(KNO)
