Timely, Big, Merciful: Kashmir and Jammu parts receive big snowfall

Srinagar: Kashmir and parts of Jammu, including the Chenab Valley areas of Doda, Banihal, Kishtwar, Ramban, Bhaderwah, and parts of Poonch, Rajouri, and Reasi, have been blanketed by a massive snowfall event on Friday and Saturday. This marks one of the heaviest snowfalls in several years in December, especially in South Kashmir, providing much-needed relief to water sources in South Kashmir and replenising glaciers.

The snowfall, which began earlier on Friday, has been as a result of a cloud system that came into J&K from the south – Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh,Ā  and was largely missed by the MeT Department.

The snowfall first started in South Kashmir areas andĀ  intensified across the region, disrupting transportation but also boosting hopes for a good water table during the coming summer months. Capital Srinagar received 7 to 9 inches of snow, while North Kashmir experienced varying degrees of snowfall.

  • Main Town, Anantnag: 1.5 feet
  • Main Town, Kulgam: 2 feet
  • Qazigund: 2 feet
  • Khudwani: 1.7 feet
  • Main Town, Shopian: 1.5 feet
  • Hakura, Anantnag: 1.6 feet
  • Achabal: 1.8 feet
  • Pampore: 1 foot
  • Bijbehara: 1.5 feet
  • Sallar: 1.5 feet

The heavy snowfall has brought both joy and challenges. While it has delighted tourists and locals alike, the snow has disrupted roadways and utility services in several areas, particularly in rural areas of South Kashmir. Road, power and other administrativeĀ  authorities across districts have been working around the clock to clear roads and restore essential services.

This timely snowfall is being seen as a blessing by farmers and environmentalists, who see it as a crucial source of moisture for agriculture and a boost for water resources in the coming months.
