Srinagar: In a landmark move, the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed a resolution today calling for the restoration of Article 370, which previously granted special status and constitutional guarantees to the region. The resolution, presented by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, was seconded by Minister Sakina Masood Itoo and reflects the Assembly’s intent to reinstate the constitutional provisions that were removed in August 2019.

The resolution highlights three key points:

1. Reaffirmation of Special Status: The Assembly emphasized the importance of Jammu and Kashmir’s former special status, noting that the constitutional guarantees protected the region’s unique identity, culture, and rights. The Assembly expressed concern over the removal of these protections, describing it as a “unilateral” action that overlooked the wishes of the region’s people.

2. Call for dialogue: The resolution urges the Government of India to engage in dialogue with the elected representatives of Jammu & Kashmir. It calls for discussions aimed at restoring the special status and constitutional safeguards, with a commitment to identifying mechanisms to reinstate these provisions.

3. Balance of national nnity and local aspirations: The Assembly emphasized that any process for restoring Article 370 must protect both India’s national unity and the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir, underscoring a balanced approach to addressing local demands within the national framework.
