Is Reservation working? Inter-college debate in Srinagar witnesses contrasting views

Srinagar: The Iqbal Institute of Technology and Management (IITM), Hyderpora, Srinagar, held an engaging inter-college debate  today, on the topic, “Should the Reservation System in Education and Jobs in India be Abolished?”

The debate brought together students and guests to discuss one of the country’s most contentious policy issues, stimulating thoughtful discourse and diverse perspectives.

Kashmir Law College, Nowshera, emerged as the winner of the debate, while Degree College, Baramulla, secured the second position. The jury members and Chief Guest lauded the participants for their well-reasoned arguments and encouraged them to maintain a balanced perspective when discussing policy matters that affect diverse communities.

The event was inaugurated by IITM Director, Dr. Rizwan A. Thakur, who emphasized the importance of involving young minds in discussions that shape society. Dr. Thakur highlighted IITM’s commitment to fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity, civic responsibility, and critical thinking among its students.

Dr. Yousuf-ul-Umar, Chairman of Iqbal Memorial Trust, was the Guest of Honour for the occasion. In his address, Dr. Yousuf-ul-Umar stressed the value of academic forums that challenge students to engage with societal issues, encouraging them to contribute meaningfully to policy discussions.

The debate featured a distinguished panel, including Chief Guest Smt. Rashmi Singh (IAS) and jury members Masarat Hashim Khan (KAS),  Ravinder Pal Singh (KPS), and Shohab Lateef (KAS), who brought insights from their respective fields of administration and law enforcement. Their presence added depth to the deliberations, as they offered professional perspectives on the implications of the reservation system in India.

Students from various colleges explored both sides of the reservation debate, delving into its historical roots, its role in promoting social equity, and the challenges it faces in today’s context. The participants examined the benefits that reservation policies offer to marginalized communities, as well as the criticisms regarding their impact on meritocracy and societal progress.

Dr. Rizwan A. Thakur concluded the event with a vote of thanks, expressing his appreciation for the dynamic participation and vibrant exchange of ideas that made the debate a memorable success. IITM extended its gratitude to Dr. Yousuf-ul-Umar, the Chief Guest, jury members, participants, and all attendees for contributing to a day of enriching dialogue on an issue that resonates with the nation.
