Srinagar, Oct 7: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said on Sunday it has reached a significant milestone with the completion of a 2.6 km long northbound tunnel on the Ramban-Banihal section of Jammu & Kashmir’s crucial NH44 highway.
The newly completed northbound tunnel runs from Digdole to Khooni Nallah and forms a vital part of the efforts to enhance road connectivity in this mountainous region.
NHAI officials told Ziraat Times that his achievement follows the earlier breakthrough of the 3 km southbound tunnel, which was completed in July 2024.
These twin-tube tunnels, once operational, are expected to revolutionize travel along the Ramban-Banihal stretch, they said.
Currently, commuters face delays and interruptions due to weather conditions and the limitations of the existing two-lane road. The new tunnels will offer all-weather connectivity, reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion, thus benefiting both residents and the commercial transport sector.
Banihal-Ramban section as most difficult sector on NH44
The Ramban-Banihal section of NH-44, part of the strategic Srinagar-Jammu national highway, is notorious for landslides and weather-induced disruptions, particularly in the winter months. The development of these twin-tube tunnels will not only bypass vulnerable areas but also ensure safer and faster travel through this critical stretch.
While the southbound tunnel was completed earlier this year, the northbound tunnel’s breakthrough marks another step towards the full operationalization of the tunnels. All remaining ancillary works, including ventilation, lighting, and safety features, are expected to be completed by June 2025.
