1-week training program on “Conservation of Eco-Fragile Areas” begins at SKUAST Ganderbal campus

Benhama, Oct 21: One-Week Entrepreneurship Skill Development Training Program on “Conservation of Eco-Fragile Areas by Establishing Green Eco Warriors Group: A Viable Option for Entrepreneurship in Ecosystem Services”

**Benhama-Watlar, October 21, 2024** – The Division of Social and Basic Sciences, Faculty of Forestry (SKUAST-K), in collaboration with Government Polytechnic College (GPC), Bandipora, inaugurated a one-week Entrepreneurship Skill Development Training Program today. The initiative, sponsored by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), focuses on the urgent need to conserve eco-fragile areas such as wetlands, forests, alpine zones, and other vulnerable ecosystems increasingly affected by human activities.

In his keynote address, Prof. Naseem Geelani, Head of the Division of Social and Basic Sciences and the Program Coordinator, emphasized the critical importance of eco-fragile regions. “These ecosystems are incredibly sensitive to environmental changes and possess a low regenerative capacity, making them especially vulnerable. Beyond their environmental significance, these areas contribute to the cultural and economic well-being of local communities,” Prof. Geelani remarked. He expressed his gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Director of Planning, and the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry for their continued support, as well as to the MSME authorities for their sponsorship.

The Principal of GPC, Bandipora,  Javaid Iqbal, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the significance of such programs in shaping students’ futures, particularly in sectors like tourism. “Conserving our eco-fragile areas is not just a necessity, but a pledge we must make to protect biodiversity. We are thankful to the organizers for choosing our college as a platform for this critical initiative,” Mr. Iqbal stated.

Dr. Showket Ahmad Dar, the Co-Coordinator of the program, shed light on the importance of protecting these delicate ecosystems.

“Many of the plants and herbs in these areas are highly susceptible to diseases and require careful management. By conserving them, we are preserving the broader ecosystem and ensuring its long-term sustainability,” he explained.

The event was anchored by  Ashfaq from GPC, Bandipora, while Rukhsana Bashir, Head of the Department of Tourism, delivered the vote of thanks. Mrs Bashir expressed her appreciation to the organizers and participants, recognizing the program as an essential step toward promoting entrepreneurship in ecosystem services and raising awareness about the conservation of eco-fragile regions.
