Mines Ministry to re-explore Lithium reserves in J&K as 2nd auction gets poor response too

Srinagar, Aug 12: The Union Ministry of Mines has announced plans to conduct further exploration across the existing lithium blocks in Jammu & Kashmir, after the second tendering process also received a poor response. Officials told Ziraat Times that the move is aimed at enhancing the commercial viability of these resources before they are put up for auction again.

According to officials, despite re-working the terms and conditions in the second auction to make them more attractive to potential bidders, the reaponse received fell short of expecation, and hence the move.

This development complements India’s efforts to secure a stable supply of lithium, a critical component for electric vehicle batteries and other advanced technologies.

The decision to carry out additional exploration is guided by the ambition that the  lithium reserves in Jammu &  Kashmir are thoroughly assessed and adequately documented. By providing more detailed information on these blocks, the Ministry aims to attract serious bidders who are willing to invest in the extraction and processing of lithium, thereby making the blocks commercially viable. This strategy is crucial for India as it seeks to reduce its dependence on imports for key minerals and raw materials essential for its burgeoning electric vehicle industry.

Lithium, often referred to as “white gold,” is a key ingredient in the production of rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs), mobile phones, laptops, and other electronic devices. As the global demand for lithium continues to surge, securing domestic sources of this vital mineral has become a top priority for many countries, including India.
