KCCI vows to combat fake handicrafts sale to protect Kashmir’s traditional industry

Srinagar, Aug 10:  The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) today issued a stren warning against the sale of fake and machine-made products being marketed as authentic Kashmir handicrafts to tourists. In a press conference held here today, the KCCI highlighted the growing concern over this fraudulent practice, which threatens the integrity and reputation of the region’s centuries-old handicraft industry.

KCCI President, Javed Tenga,  addressing the media, expressed grave concern over the reports and complaints received from tourists who have unknowingly purchased imitation products labeled as genuine Kashmiri handicrafts. He described this practice as “shameful” and stressed that it poses a significant threat to the livelihood of artisans and the overall economy of the region.

“Our traditional handicraft business, known worldwide for its high-quality materials and unparalleled craftsmanship, is being undermined by the sale of fake products. This not only harms the reputation of Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage but also has severe economic implications for those who depend on this trade,” the KCCI President stated.

Kashmir’s handicraft tradition dates back to the 14th century, introduced by Hazrat Shahi Hamdan Mir Syed Ali Hamadani (RA) and flourishing under the reign of Sultan Zainul Abidin in the 15th century. The region’s artisans are renowned for producing fine textiles such as Pashmina shawls, Sozni embroidered shawls, mulberry silk products, carpets, wood carvings, papier-mâché, and copperware. These products have been a vital part of the state’s economy, providing employment to artisans and contributing to export growth.

However, the recent surge in the sale of machine-made products as handcrafted items has started to erode consumer confidence. Some tourists, upon discovering they have been deceived, have reported feeling cheated, which could have long-term repercussions for the industry.

In response, the KCCI has resolved to take decisive action to protect the integrity of genuine Kashmiri handicrafts. The Chamber has proposed that all dealers and showroom owners clearly label their products, distinguishing between machine-made items and authentic handicrafts. This measure, they believe, will help preserve the trust of consumers and safeguard the livelihoods of artisans.

The KCCI also issued a stern warning to traders engaging in these deceptive practices. “Those found selling machine-made products as genuine Kashmiri handicrafts will be identified by special KCCI squads and exposed in the media. We will recommend that these traders be blacklisted and dealt with sternly by the relevant government agencies,” the KCCI President declared.

The Chamber emphasized that while they are not opposed to the sale of machine-made products, these items must not be misrepresented as traditional Kashmiri handicrafts.
