Handicrafts Dept Kashmir celebrates National Handloom Day

Srinagar, Aug 7 — In a colorful tribute to tradition and craftsmanship, Kashmir Haat hosted National Handloom Day, marking a major event for the handloom industry in Jammu and Kashmir. Organized by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, the celebration was marked by the presence of  Vikramjit Singh, Commissioner/Secretary Industries and Commerce, J&K, as the Chief Guest.

In his address, Singh highlighted the importance of reserving and promoting handloom traditions. He reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to supporting artisans and increasing the visibility of Kashmiri handloom products both nationally and internationally. He praised the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir for its unwavering efforts in nurturing an environment where traditional crafts can flourish.

A pivotal moment of the event was the presentation of certificates to two outstanding contributors in the handloom sector. Mr. Fayaz Ahmad Shah was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for creating largest hand-knotted carpet in Kashmir, which has set a new benchmark in the industry and highlighted the intricate artistry and rich heritage of Kashmiri craftsmanship. Ms. Yasmeena also received a Certificate of Appreciation for her invaluable work training over 300 artisans in the Pashmina hand-spinning craft. Her efforts have significantly improved the skills and livelihoods of many, while strengthening the tradition of Pashmina weaving. On the occasion, certificates were presented to the newly established Industrial Co-operative societies. Additionally, Yarn Raw Material Passbooks, Training Certificates, and Pension Scheme Certificates were distributed to beneficiaries by the office of the Development Commissioner Handloom.

Speaking passionately about the sector’s recent achievements and future initiatives, Director of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, Mr. Mahmood Ahmad Shah, outlined projects aimed at upgrading skills, improving market access and ensuring the sustainability of handloom practices. He expressed gratitude to all participants and stakeholders for their support and contributions to the handloom sector.

In a notable development, Srinagar has recently been designated as a World Craft City by the World Craft Council. This prestigious recognition highlights the city’s rich tradition of craftsmanship and its significant role in the global craft sector. It adds to the prestige of National Handloom Day celebrations.

The event showcased a variety of activities, including live demonstrations of traditional weaving techniques, exhibitions of handloom products, interactive sessions with artisans, and cultural performances. Attendees had the opportunity to witness the intricate process of hand-woven textiles and interact with the skilled craftsmen behind these exquisite creations.
