
Srinagar, Aug 31: Former President of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) Sheikh Ashiq today formally joined Er Rashid’s Awami Ittehad Party. The party leadership made a formal announcement to this effect at a press conference in Srinagar today. Those present on the occasion include party caretaker President Ishtiyaq Qadri, spokesperson Inamul Haq, former High Court Bar Association President Advocate G N Shaheen, Election Organising Committe head Parvez Ahmed and Abrar Rashid, son of Engineer Rahid.
Sheikh Ashiq, who served as the President of the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and is the co-owner of Al Khuddam Hajj and Umrah Services, is now said to contest the upcoming elections from the Lal Chowk assembly constituency, sources from AIP told Ziraat Times.
The party, which has been expanding its base in Jammu & Kashmir lately, after Er Rashid’s victory in the parliamentary elections, is likely to benefit from Ashiq’s deep ties within the local business and social communities, sources said.
Lal Chowk, one of the most symbolic and politically significant constituencies in Jammu & Kashmir, is likely to witness a close contest between the major contests in the constituency.
Some reports have also suggested that he may contest the elections from Ganderbal constituency, where from former chief minister and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah is contesting.
