Earth Day celebrated at IUST campus; Khurshid Ganai, Shakeel Romshoo, Irfan Ali speak on the occasion

Srinagar, April 27: As part of the ongoing Earth Week celebrations, a seminar was held at the Islamic University of Science and Technology  Awantipora. The program was attended by Khurshid Ahmad Ganie (IAS Retd.), Former Advisor to Governor, Dr Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor, IUST, Awantipora, VC Central University, Kashmir, Irfan Ali Shah (IFS), Conservator of Forests, Kashmir South Forest Circle, Saqib Qadri Environment Specialist, representatives of NGOs, Deans and Faculty members of IUST, students of Mantaqi School IUST, Forest officers and other officials.

During the inaugural program, various speakers shed light on different aspects of climate change, carbon sink development and emission neutral strategies and net zero emission target 2070.

During the panel discussion, forestation  interventions through different schemes and Government programs for climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience were discussed in detail. The emerging role of Artificial Intelligence in Forestry sector was also highlighted during the discussions. A question answer session with students on various environmental issues was also part of the deliberations.

The program was coordinated by Asifa Mehraj Baba, an Artificial Intelligence expert.

The particpants on the occasion agreed on making Awantipora and its peripheries a ‘carbon neutral place’ in the coming years and an engagement plan was agreed for working with IUST management and local communities for promoting this green cause.
