Panick stricken people in Srinagar’s old city came on the roads after the tremors.

Srinagar, Marc 21: Panic gripped people across J&K after a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.6 on the Richter scale occurred on Tuesday night across the region.

The quake struck 133 km southeast of Fayzabad in Afghanistan, according to National Centre for Seismology.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates and Kashmir being close to the faulting regularly experiences such earth quakes.

The high-intensity earthquake occurred 22:10:27 IST.

There was no immediate report of any damage in the earthquake which caused panic among the people who rushed out of their houses.

Social media was abuzz with fake news, causing further panic and anxiety among people. Authorities have cautioned social media users to desist from circulating fake news of damage from the earth quake.

As the recent tragic earth quake of Turkey Syria region remains fresh in people’s minds, today’s earth quake and the thought that it also happened at night time caused  more anxiety among people across J&K.

Fearing aftershocks, many people remain vigilant at night after this earthquake.
