Big relief to city commuters as RTO Srinagar designates 73 routes for E-Rickshaws

Srinagar, Mar 14: A day after the announcement on notifying 55 additional routes for e-rickshaws to operate in Srinagar city, the officials at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Kashmir on Tuesday said they are in process of allocating the routes to operators based on the merits of their residence and preference.

Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari told the news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that they have 314 E-Rickshaws registered with them and that they have so far notified 73 routes in Srinagar city.

Residents of Srinagar, especially from those areas with scant or no public transport told Ziraat Times that are welcoming the move, which is much needed and timely.

“To ensure the services on notified routes, we are in a process of allocating the routes to E-Rickshaw operators based on the merits of their residence and preference. The process is a new one and it will take some time to get finalised,” he said.

He said the routes which have been notified just a day before cannot have the availability of E-Rickshaws but the options are available. Many aspirants who wanted to buy a normal auto rickshaw are changing their decision, he said.

“E-Rickshaws are lesser in cost, productive, and with less expenditure; its spread and service in the valley is going to pick up, and we are trying to keep this facility available at all places,” he added.

On Monday, the RTO authorities in a notification said they have notified 55 additional routes in addition to the 18 routes already notified.

The traffic regulatory authorities said the e-Rickshaws shall be allowed to ply on the following additional routes with the restriction that no E-Rickshaw shall ply anywhere on the National Highway and from Tengpora Bypass to Sonwar and Jehangir Chowk to Airport road segments in the Srinagar City.
