Milk supplies to Srinagar disrupted as Pulwama supplies sent back today

Srinagar: At least 200 vehicles carrying milk to Srinagar city were turned back to Pulwama district on Wednesday morning, which, the milk suppliers say, has resulted in financial loss worth crores of rupees to them.

Milk producing unions of Pulwama told Ziraat Times that the move had taken them by surprise and it has resulted in huge losses to milk producers.

“The administration had made us believe that milk is an essential commodity and that transportation of milk supplies were exempt from the lockdown. And then early morning Wednesday, when we tried to enter Srinagar, we were barred to enter and were sent back”, Abdul Rashid, a milk supplier told Ziraat Times.

Several milk retailers of Srinagar, especially of Downtown Srinagar, have reported shortage of milk due to sending back of milk supplies on Wednesday.

Civil society groups and netizens on social media have expressed surprise over this move.

“It is good that the administration is enforcing the lockdown strictly as we cannot afford any crowding in these circumstances. However, there is no point in barring distribution of an essential commodity like milk”, Syeda Naaz wrote on Twitter.
