Dr Arun Kumar Mehta is J&K’s new Chief Secretary; here is his brief profile

Srinagar: Dr Arun Kumar Mehta, presently J&K government Financial Commissioner, Finance, has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of the union territory.

Born in 1963, Mr Mehta is a 1988 batch IAS officer from J&K cadre, originally from the state of Bihar. He has done B.Tech, followed by M.Tech. in Civil Engineering & Ph.D.

Dr Arun Kumar Mehta was empaneled for a central government position as a Secretary in the Governmnet of India in 2020. Mr Mehta, who was earlier serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forest and Climate Change, assumed his J&K mission in December 2018.

It may be recalled that Ziraat Times had done an exclusive story in January 2021 which delved in to the likely reasons of Mr Mehta going on long leave. As the senior most IAS officer of J&K cadre, he was widely assumed to be selected for the chief secretary position.

One of Dr Mehta’s key achievements as Financial Commissioner, Finance of J&K government is his ability to manage the process of budget making and entire financial planning in the absence of an elected government in J&K.
