Livestock slaughter houses in Srinagar, Jammu to come up by end of FY21

SRINAGAR: Principal Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department, Dheeraj Gupta today asked the Municipal Commissioners of Jammu and Srinagar to get completed the slaughter houses in both the cities in this financial year only.


The meeting of ‘Slaughter House Monitoring Committee’ was held to review the progress of these projects which are being constructed to provide hygienic meat to the consumers in both the capital cities.


Special Secretary H&UDD, Muhammad Harun; SMC Commissioner, Gazanfar Ali; Director Animal Husbandry, Kashmir, Purnima Mittal; Director Sheep Husbandry, Kashmir, Abdul Salam Mir; Director Urban Local Bodies, Kashmir, Riyaz Ahmad Wani; SSP Srinagar, Javaid Hassan were present in the meeting.


JMC Commissioner, Anvy Lavasa, Member Secretary, Pollution Control Board, B.M Sharma; Director Urban Local Bodies Jammu, Vir Ji Hangloo; Director Animal Husbandry, Jammu, Vivek Sharma and Director Sheep Husbandry, Jammu, Sanjeev Kumar participated in the meeting through a video link.


The Principal Secretary asked the officers that every kind of modern facility should be made available in these slaughter houses so that hygienic and quality meat is provided to consumers besides keeping check on illegal slaughtering of animals.
He also directed the Municipal Commissioners to randomly check butchers for quality of the meat they sell till the projects are completed and the process gets centralized.


Dheeraj also asked the Housing Department to prepare DPRs for the construction of modern abattoirs in all the municipalities. He asked them to frame committee for preparing two types of model DPRs so that bigger and smaller towns are provided modern abattoirs as per their need. He enjoined upon them to complete the process within a month.


In the meeting it was informed that two modern, state of the art slaughter houses with all the mechanical provisions are being constructed in Srinagar and Jammu. These slaughter houses has the capacity of accommodating 5000 animals/day and will suffice needs of these cities for decades to come, they added.


The meeting was further informed that while the project at Jammu would be completed at a cumulative cost of Rs 27 crore, the one at Srinagar would be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore.


The meeting was apprised that work on civil component of the projects is going on and the projects are scheduled to be completed by the specified deadline.
