LMD issues 71 challans, 60 notices across J&K in October

JAMMU, OCTOBER 20: The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) has intensified enforcement across Jammu & Kashmir ahead of the festival season, issuing 71 challans and serving 60 improvement notices in October 2026 so far.

The enforcement drive, being conducted under the supervision of Controller Legal Metrology J&K Shiv Kumar Gupta, aims to protect consumers against unfair trade practices and ensure compliance with prescribed standards in markets and commercial establishments.

Departmental teams have been inspecting markets across districts to detect violations, including short delivery, underweight commodities, use of unverified weights and measures, and failure to comply with mandatory declarations on packaged goods.

The department has also imposed penalties amounting to ₹3.50 lakh in cases involving short delivery of fuel, underweight commodities and failure to comply with improvement notices within the prescribed period.

Under the Jan Vishwas framework, improvement notices are being issued, wherever applicable, to provide traders and commercial establishments an opportunity to rectify identified violations within the stipulated period. Failure to comply has resulted in further legal action, including penalties in appropriate cases.

Alongside enforcement, the department is conducting consumer awareness camps and trader awareness programmes across the Union Territory to explain the applicable Legal Metrology legislation, the new enforcement framework and compliance requirements under the Jan Vishwas Act.

The initiatives are intended to encourage voluntary compliance, prevent inadvertent violations and promote transparency and accountability in commercial transactions.

The department has advised consumers to check the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), net quantity and other mandatory declarations on packaged commodities while shopping during the festival season. Consumers have also been urged to verify promotional offers and discounts, insist on proper bills and ensure that the quantity delivered matches the quantity paid for.

Consumers who suspect violations have been advised to report them to the nearest Legal Metrology office for appropriate action.
