Maharashtra, HP, Odisha, Jharkhand, MP groups join Kashmir delegation on J&K FRA

Srinagar, October 6: A delegation of the National Alliance on Community Forest Resources & Minor Forest Produce (NACM), along with members of the Jammu & Kashmir Climate Action Group, met Speaker of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly Abdul Rahim Rather on Monday and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention for effective implementation of the Forest Rights Act, 2006 (FRA-2006) in Jammu & Kashmir.

The delegation included representatives from Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

During the meeting, the delegation apprised the Speaker of issues and concerns relating to implementation of the Forest Rights Act in the Union Territory.

The members urged the Speaker to intervene and facilitate measures for effective implementation of FRA-2006. They said the legislation had contributed to transforming rural livelihoods in states where it has been implemented.

The delegation also raised issues faced by communities dependent on forest resources and sought the Speaker’s support in taking up the matter with the concerned authorities for consideration and resolution.

The Speaker assured the delegation that he would take up the matter with the concerned authorities and seek appropriate intervention on the issues raised.

He also assured the members that their concerns would be conveyed to the concerned quarters for due consideration in accordance with the applicable provisions and framework.
